‘Integrating sea turtle conservation with ecotourism’ is the a new project aimed at establishing ecotourism enteprise initiatives to locals engaged in conservation of sea turtles. The project recently handed over a boat (and outboard engine) to the Funzi Turtle Club. This boat will be used in the ecotourism activities as well as enable sea and beach patrols. The 30 member group is currently undertaking activities such as daily beach clean-ups and patrols, habitat rehabilitation, in-situ nest protection, hatchling release programs, tagging and release programs, village guided tours, creation of awareness on the sea turtle, as well as production of handicrafts and souvenirs.
Funzi island, lying on the Kenyan South coast, is one of Kenya’s sea turtle nesting sites. The project is funded by the IUCN Netherlands and managed locally by KESCOM.
